In honor of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth, From Humble Beginnings: Lincoln's Illinois, 1830-1861 will explore the Illinois that Lincoln knew through the eyes of the people who lived here. From Humble Beginnings Traces the dynamic changes in Illinois' agriculture, industry, and transportation that, by 1861, helped transform Illinois from a frontier region to a powerful state. Objects and artifacts from the exhibition will include a rare John Deere plow, maps of Illinois from the 1800s, artifacts from archaeological sites around the state, household goods, and children's toys and belongings.

Illinois Women in Leadership will hold its Holiday Social at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 3 at Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield. The evening will feature dinner, mingling and a silent auction to benefit IWIL’s annual college scholarships for high school senior girls and adult women who are returning to school. Items for bidding include a week’s stay at a Florida condo, two nights at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in St. Louis, and an overnight stay in an executive room at the Crowne Plaza in Springfield. Guests and potential new members, as well as spouses and partners are welcome to attend this special event. The cost of the social is $35 per member and $25 per guest, which includes dinner and one drink. Reservation forms are available at www.iwil.biz . The Illinois State Museum monthly lecture will be held on December 9, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Museum's Research and Collections Center. Alan Harn, Dickson Mounds Museum will present "Archaeo/Geological Investigations of the Emiquon Refuge Restoration Project, Fulton County, Illinois." This event is free and open to the public. In 2003, Dickson Mounds Museum and the Nature Conservancy began a comprehensive archaeological investigation of the newly developing Emiquon preserve. These studies indicate that today's Thompson Lake is only the most recent in a series of former Illinois River channels that occupied the bottomland. Nearly 70 new archaeological sites were found within the refuge over the last several years, and excavations and soil coring into the bottomland sediments are providing new insights into paleoclimates, bottomland geomorphology, and how early Native Americans adjusted to this constantly changing world. Discover Illinois' rich prehistoric and historic past by attending a Paul Mickey Science program. A different speaker and topic are featured each month. The "Fighting for Air" Stairclimb is the American Lung Association's 1st Annual competitive stairclimb. It is sometimes referred to as a vertical road race since it requires individuals to move their entire body weight vertically, rather than horizontally. Novice and expert climbers are encouraged to participate and can climb as individuals or in teams. Proceeds from the Event will support lung health research, education and advocacy in Illinois.
